Who cares if it’s a new year or even a new decade? When you wake up tomorrow, treat the day like you should any other day: A fresh opportunity to learn, to improve, to gain.
But, in the spirit of resolutions and reformations, let’s talk about making you the best YOU that you can be.
Let’s go back to the basics and talk about the meta-skills you need—absolutely NEED—to find success.
Farah Bousaleh, Entrepreneur.com contributor, describes how you’ll need to be at the outset of a new career if you expect to find success. If it’s a new year, new you or just new day, new opportunity, these 5 principles still ring true:
1. Listen.
Always, always, always listen and learn from those around you who have experience. Willfully and enthusiastically learn about the industry, work dynamics, building relationships, whatever it is you need to understand better. Listen to feedback as well—very important.
2. Take initiative
Organizations value members who take the first step. Do this for yourself as well. Bring something totally new and unexpected to the table. Research, list the pros and cons, draft a proposal or a plan, and just do it.
3. Keep learning
Never stop learning. Keep an open mind and treat every situation—even negative ones—as learning experiences. Learn from your failures. See value in your mistakes and make sure you learn from them for later. And above all, take ownership of your failures. You’ll never progress if you redirect blame.
4. Build trust
You won’t succeed alone. Build connections and demonstrate that you can give value to anyone and everyone. You’ll only grow if you gain respect and trust from those with resources and experience.
Be committed, on time, and be present physically and mentally. Strive to be a source of solutions, and people will begin to come to you on their own.
5. Stay positive
Always make a good impression. Show care, tolerance, compassion, and commitment. Manifest positivity and you will attract positivity. Make sure you express that you’re grateful for anyone who helps you, and be ready to offer reciprocal help. Gratitude and reciprocity are key.
